Zamare is very excited to announce that it has acquired the right to 100% of licence 27219-HQ-LEL in NW Zambia. This licence in far NW Zambia covers the south-western continuation of the Western Foreland style of rocks which hosts the massive Kamoa-Kakula mine and orebody in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Kamoa-Kakula orebody is the fourth largest and highest-grade copper resource globally, with a NI 43-101 resource of 1,387 million tonnes at 2.74% copper. After initial production in Q2 2021, the mine is forecast by Ivanhoe to reach an annualised production rate of 600,000 tonnes by Q4 2024.

The Western Foreland has been described by Robert Friedland, founder of Ivanhoe Mines, as “A whole new mineral province” which has the potential to host multiple copper discoveries.

The Western Foreland is defined as the contact between ancient basement and younger Katangan aged rocks. Copper mineralisation was found at Kamoa-Kakula in these younger Katangan aged rocks but in an age of rock which historically was thought by geologists not to have contained copper. The Kamoa discovery has triggered a rethink in exploration across the Copperbelt. This rethink has informed Zamare’s interest.

As illustrated on fig.1 the Western Foreland contact, also known as the Kansoko Trend, runs south-west from Kamoa-Kakula through the DRC. It is also noticeable, and very encouraging for Zamare, that much of this Trend is also held under exploration licence by Ivanhoe Mines, and that Ivanhoe’s licences continue almost to the Zambian border. The Kansoko Trend then passes through NW Zambia before continuing into Angola, where Zamare understands other major companies are active in copper exploration

Licence 27919-HQ-LEL is c402km2 and sits across the contact between the ancient basement and the younger Katangan aged rocks.

    Geological discussion on 27219-HQ-LEL

Although detailed geological information on the licence is not available, regional mapping was conducted by the Zambian Geological Survey supported by the British Geological Survey in the late 1990s. From this data there are encouraging similarities between the Kalene Hills licence and Kamoa.

A key feature of Kamoa is that the Lower Roan group of rocks is missing so that Mwashya rocks and in places the Grand Conglomerate directly onlap onto basement. The base of the Grand Conglomerate forms the first redox horizon along which mineralisation precipitates. There are also 2 recognised structural controls at Kamoa, namely the NE-SW Kansonko Trend and the NW-SE trending Mupaka fault. At Kalene Hills, the same basement edge on which Kamoa is focussed continues across the licence. The stratigraphy has been previously mapped as Lower Roan and potential redox horizons are identified within it. These form targets analogous to Kamoa within the Lower Roan which also hosts most Zambian Copperbelt orebodies. In addition to the lithological similarities, the structural features look to be the same at Kalene Hills (Figure 1 right). The regional geological maps show clear, uplifted basement along this trend with onlapping sediments. Geophysical data also shows certain NW-SE faults, which have been identified in the geological mapping as well. From geological commentary by Ivanhoe we know that faulting has an important role in mineralisation at Kamoa-Kakula.

Available, regional stream sediment sampling data indicates that there is a low-level increase in background Cu along the contact of a “locally graphitic siltstone”.

Carbon rich (especially organic carbon), siltstones and shales are the typical reducing horizons in the Copperbelt (such as the Ore Shale of the Lower Roan). The elevated Cu zone is almost 7km in length and analysis of other elements (such as the Cu/Sc ratio) indicates that it does not have a mafic source (Figure 2). Within the same stream sediment sampling programme, known Cu showings were not identified in the analysis.

Some younger cover, including Kalahari, does exist on the licence (units R,S,T, U,V and W in Figure 2) though is limited in extent and does not cover all of the basement edge.

Zamare’s exploration plan will start with acquiring what historic data can be found on the licence before commissioning a systematic soil sample programme and field mapping. Our Head of Exploration, Tom Gmerek, made an initial visit last week and is preparing plans for our exploration programme currently.
